6:01 am
morning with breaking news from texas. [ explosion ] >> i can't hear, i can't hear! get out of here! >> a massive explosion has killed up to 15 people. this number is expected to rise. more than 100 people are injured. it was a fertilizer plant that blew up yesterday and that explosion leveled surrounding home in the town of west, texas, about 20 miles north o waco, 80 miles south of dallas. jason allen joins us live there. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. the sun has come up here. we are dealing with some dropping temperatures and some driving rain and firefighters and officials have told us that they are still in a recovery and rescue mode and without question, this weather is probably going to hamper that somewhat. the scene is about a mile or so to the north of where we are here at this volunteer fire
6:02 am
department a place where a lot of the very first responders left from this area to get to the fire that was reported up at that scene. as the sun comes up, we are going to just now start getting a real good look at the extent of the damage, which we were in the immediate area a couple of hours after the blast last night. the term leveled is accurate. the scene is similar to what we see after a tornado except instead of a small swath of damage, it's widespread. walls and roofs have collapsed and it looks like that for blocks around the damage zone so extensive damage and crews some of them really now just starting to get an idea of the full extent of the damage as we are getting back into the daylight hours. >> they are still in the process of combing through some of this rubble.
6:03 am
i'm assuming going house to house. >> reporter: yes including overnight. some of the smoke from the fire was thick and choking. and they wanted to get people out for those reasons. there had also been some talk there might be people trapped in the rubble in some of the homes, some of them -- as we said, the walls have been blown in and the roofs and ceilings came down. they didn't know if there were people who were still in some of those homes. they were going door to door and house to house. there was a large apartment building in the area that had extensive damage that they were combing through to make sure everyone got out of that and there are some first responders as we said some firefighters who initially responded there to the scene. and even through some of the overnight hours, we talked to some friends and some family of them as they came in. they had still not heard from all of those initial firefighters who responded to
6:04 am
the scene. they don't know the situation. they don't know about casualties. so they are still digging through the rubble to see if any of those firefighters initially responded are still there. >> this is a volunteer fire department. it's a small town where you know everyone. how is the town coping now the morning after? >> we saw a lot of people from the town and from the surrounding towns even come in. you mentioned it is very small. about 2500 people. pooch people from all over and -- people from all over wanted to help. you could tell that the emotion -- they believe some people are probably in the blast area
6:05 am
either injured orr possibly worse. so it's very difficult. we have seen some more people come here to this fire station this morning breaking down in tears. don't know their situation. but we know that there are still some vehicles parked here at this fire department from firefighters. >> we wish you all the best. jason allen live in texas, thank you. to the latest from boston this morning, president obama is going to visit boston to attend a service honoring victims of the marathon bombings. the number of people killed in monday's explosion remains at 3 with more than 170 injured including many who had to have limbs amputated. surveillance video appears to be the focus of the investigation? as susan mcginnis reports, images show at least one man deemed suspicious in the moments prior to the explosion.
6:06 am
reporter: the scene of the second bomb that went off during monday's boston marathon may give us our first look at the suspected bomber. sources tell cbs news that security cameras at a lord & taylor store captured a man leaving a bag in the area just before the blast. the suspect is described as a young white man seen carrying a backpack and talking on a cell phone. sources say he was wearing a black jacket, a gray hoodie and white baseball cap turned backwards on his head. just after the first bomb went off, the suspect left the scene. moments later, the second bomb detonated. investigators are also looking at cell phone records hoping to match one of the calls to the man seen in the video. >> there were people with their clothes burning off. >> reporter: karen and her husband john felt the first blast while waiting for their daughter to call to finish the marathon. the bomb tore through john's legs. >> my husband kept saying, my leg, my leg. i said --and then the second explosion hit.
6:07 am
>> reporter: nicole and the other runners were stopped just before the finish line. >> all i knew is that my family was at the finish line so i just started running and trying to find everybody. >> reporter: karen says her husband is recovering but is still unable to speak. she says she's received support from family and strangers. >> we were sitting in the waiting room yesterday, and strangers were coming up to us and saying we are so sorry. >> reporter: about a third of those injured in the attack remain in the hospital. susan mcginnis, cbs news, boston an 11-year-old boy out of martinez who was injured by the explosions is now recovering from a successful surgery according to a family friend. aaron hern has a shrapnel wound and other minor injuries. doctors removed a breathing tube after his second operation yesterday. several businesses in martinez are holding fundraisers to help pay for his care. he is hospitalized in intensive care, be out there for at least another week. we have some live pictures.

42 degrees. 44 at concord. 54 at oakland and in livermore, 42 degrees. san francisco has 52 in the city right now. and it will warm up today. san francisco yesterday hit 65, today up to 69. san jose hit 77 and that's 8 degrees warmer than yesterday. pretty much the same story at concord, livermore and santa rosa, will all be coming up today in the mid-80s by next week. mid-80s by monday, tuesday and wednesday, looks like a good beach weekend. more details when we do weather in about 10 minutes. that's weather. here's traffic. the numbers keep creeping up especially inland. all right. thank you, brian. we have big problems right now. traveling westbound 580, traffic is nearly at a standstill right now if you are approaching the dublin interchange. look at this live look. westbound 580 i haven't seen this backed up in a while. a couple of big rigs crashed into each other near the dublin interchange. two lanes are getting by but two lanes remain closed and

it's jamming back towards at least airway boulevard. checking the drive time right now, it is up to 672 minutes so it's more than an hour right now take you from the altamont pass to the dublin interchange. you may want to consider using isabel, stanley another good option. westbound 580 at a slow crawl. a second traffic alert is in dixon. a medical helicopter left the scene, this was a double overturn crash eastbound 80 approaching dixon avenue. one lane getting by but stacking up towards vacaville. bart, there still may be residual delays. we are hoping things begin to improve but earlier they were doing track maintenance near the embarcadero station. so probably about five- to ten- minute delays in both directions. that is traffic.

6:12 am
planned. it was supposed to be held at lotta's fountain but had to be moved because of police activity on market street. they had that whole area closed down. and they had to end up moving that part of the ceremony. let me tell you about the fire hydrant. a series of fires broke out spreading through the city. these fires erupted from ruptured gas lines. water mains also broke in the quake. and fire hydrants were running dry. it was discovered there was water in this one. people who lived here pulled engines up the hill and helped firefighters battle the flames. now, every year, the fire chief paints it gold. you might remember last year however it was accidentally painted the wrong color got a coat of silver but i have been told they have already picked out the paint and it will be the right color this year. live in san francisco, elissa harrington, kpix 5. >> it wouldn't be san francisco
